1st Morning in Nebraska

April 21st, 2012

My first morning hunt in Nebraska proved hard to beat. It seemed as if there were birds gobbling in every direction from the roost. Shortly after fly-down, a tom and three hens walked across the field in front of us and back into the timber. Then the birds popped back out in the field and came to within 70 yards of our blind before skirting around us. The birds gobbled all morning and finally, at 10:30am, we had a tom get lonely and do the mean-walk towards our blind from 150 yards out behind us. He peeled around the front of the blind 30 yards out and then hooked back in tight as he strutted towards our decoy. I shot him at just a handful of yards from the blind!

It was a great hunt and a great way to kick off a few days of bowhunting turkeys in Nebraska.

I still laugh every time I watch our friend, Kari VanDyken, flingin’ arrows across the family room.  Good stuff!

TN Tom for Jon Paul

April 15th, 2012

Jon Paul scored on his first turkey of spring on what went down as the quickest hunt of his life recently. With just a short window of opportunity between work meetings, Jon Paul slipped into the woods and popped up his Double Bull blind. A distant gobble confirmed that a tom was hearing Jon Paul’s calls. A few minutes later the longbeared strutted to within 10 yards of the front of the blind to check out the hen decoy. Jon Paul unleashed the Rage and the bird tipped over within a few feet. Congrats Jon Paul!

Turkey Opener in MT

April 14th, 2012

Prettiest turkey hunt of my life this morning with my little boy Aidan, and daughter, Avery! I dumped the shot in the midst of crunchtime chaos in the blind and shot low. Heartbreaker! New spot this evening. Time for redemption!

Warrior Pink Arrows for Jessi

April 13th, 2012

I’m going with warrior pink arrows this spring to honor my little sister, Jessica, as she battles cancer. Jessi is in the fight for her life with breast cancer. I want to encourage you to pray for her daily as she continues to work towards kickin’ this nasty disease from her body. I know God has an incredible plan for Jessi. I pray that His plan includes using her here on earth for a long time to encourage others and offer the hope that she has in and through her relationship with the Lord.

Jessi and her husband, James, do a ton of work in their efforts to help and encourage others that are battling cancer. Be sure to take a minute to check out their website at http://gijesswarriors.com or visit them here on Facebook at GI Jess Warriors for a Cause.

We love you Jessi and pray for you constantly!

First Bood with New Mathews Helim

April 11th, 2012

Turkey season opens this weekend here in Montana, but with my new Mathews Helim bow all set up I just couldn’t wait until the weekend to break it in on live game. So on the way home from a meeting yesterday I made a quick stop by one of the fields I shoot gophers in. It was a warm day and the gophers were up. I managed to gig a good handful of the little suckers before I had to get back to chores around town. It was really good to shed first blood of the year with my new bow!
If you haven’t done so already, be sure to check out the new Mathews Helim. Once again the folks at Mathews have outdone themselves. This bow is without a doubt my favorite yet!

Success in Nebraska

April 9th, 2012

Our good friend and turkey thumper, Zeke Pipher, scored pretty quick into the Nebraska season. Here’s his story…

I switched to VAP arrows (Victory Archery) this spring, and it turned out to be a good call. The first arrow I launched punched my first tag of 2012.

Nebraska’s turkey season opened on March 25, but I’d been too busy to hunt until last Monday. I took my eight-year-old son, Aidan, with me, and we sat for a couple hours. We saw a few birds, but nothing close enough to draw back on. Aidan had to get home by noon for a school event, so I dropped him off, grabbed a sandwich, and then slipped back into the trees alongside the river.

About twenty minutes into the “second” hunt, a gobble rang out through the cedars. It about stopped my heart. The tom worked toward my decoy and strutted in the trees about fifty yards away for thirty minutes. I was just pushing “send” on a text message to a buddy telling him about the turkey that was teasing me when he gobbled right outside the blind. He was twenty yards out and closing the distance. As his bright red head cleared the last branch, I pulled back, anchored, and exhaled. I released my arrow when I had a clean shot and it flew straight.

Aidan was bummed that he couldn’t have been with me, but we get three tags here in the Cornhusker state so we’ve got a couple more chances together. I wish you friends all the best this spring. Aim steady & shoot true!

Be sure to check out Zeke’s new book, Man On The Run. It is without a doubt one of the best books any man can possibly read.  Check it out at:  http://www.amazon.com/Man-Run-Helping-Hyper-Hobbied-Recognize/dp/1451617216/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328888055&sr=8-1

Chris Breaks In the Yeller Jacket

April 6th, 2012

Chris Blaskowski recently got a chance to break in his new Centaur longbow, freshly made by Jimmy Neaves. The victim was a destructive Montana porcupine that let Chris get a little too close with the new bow he calls the “Yeller Jacket”.
Nice work Chris!

Fox in Bow Range…Again

April 3rd, 2012

I went out for a quick scouting run this morning to look and listen for turkeys. I had just stepped into the timber and was attaching the strap to my Canon 7D camera when I heard leaves crunchin’ close by. I looked up and the big fox that I almost got a shot at the last weekend of bow season was cruising by me at less than 20 yards. He had no idea I was standing there! I eased my camera up for a shot and managed to snap a couple blurry pix as he was scootin’ out of there. I’m gonna kill this fox! He’s slipped within bow range of me twice now. I’m gonna pop up the Double Bull and a decoy and try and call him in once more.
