My good buddy and pastor-friend, Efton Green, wasted little time punchin’ a few Georgia turkey tags this morning. Here’s his story…
Mishaps turn out to be a blessing…
I packed my gear into my truck and headed to the woods. Upon arrival I realized that my new Zink Hen Decoy had blown out of my truck. With daylight fastly approaching I raced all the way back home looking for it on the side of the road. By the time I found it, it was already becoming daylight. I headed back to the woods knowing I had to change locations or I would be busted coming in to the field. As soon as I got out of my truck I started crow calling – I could hear some birds a long way off. I cut the distance just inside of the wood line, made a few soft calls and the birds answered back. They were closer than I thought so I moved back into the field and set up my decoys, I made another call and one of the birds cut me off. At that point I just stopped calling. Minutes later the first bird flew right on top of my decoys and landed. Realizing that I had an opportunity to take the bird right where it landed, I took the shot. My shot hit low and the bird ran out into the field and lay down. At that moment, a second bird flew down into the field which spooked my first bird. I lightly called to the second bird and it walked over to inspect my decoys. I drew my Z-7 back and the Simmons Tree Shark hit its mark. The bird flew a short distance and landed back in the field, ran to the tree line and gave up the ghost. I ran to retrieve my first bird, secured it and then retrieved my second bird. The lesson learned; mishaps are not all bad. I knelt and celebrated with a prayer of thanks to the good Lord above for giving me the opportunity to take two birds.
