Double Trouble for the Preacher

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

My good buddy and pastor-friend, Efton Green, wasted little time punchin’ a few Georgia turkey tags this morning. Here’s his story…

Mishaps turn out to be a blessing…
I packed my gear into my truck and headed to the woods. Upon arrival I realized that my new Zink Hen Decoy had blown out of my truck. With daylight fastly approaching I raced all the way back home looking for it on the side of the road. By the time I found it, it was already becoming daylight. I headed back to the woods knowing I had to change locations or I would be busted coming in to the field. As soon as I got out of my truck I started crow calling – I could hear some birds a long way off. I cut the distance just inside of the wood line, made a few soft calls and the birds answered back. They were closer than I thought so I moved back into the field and set up my decoys, I made another call and one of the birds cut me off. At that point I just stopped calling. Minutes later the first bird flew right on top of my decoys and landed. Realizing that I had an opportunity to take the bird right where it landed, I took the shot. My shot hit low and the bird ran out into the field and lay down. At that moment, a second bird flew down into the field which spooked my first bird. I lightly called to the second bird and it walked over to inspect my decoys. I drew my Z-7 back and the Simmons Tree Shark hit its mark. The bird flew a short distance and landed back in the field, ran to the tree line and gave up the ghost. I ran to retrieve my first bird, secured it and then retrieved my second bird. The lesson learned; mishaps are not all bad. I knelt and celebrated with a prayer of thanks to the good Lord above for giving me the opportunity to take two birds.

The Breeder

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

Turkey season in Montana is just a few weeks out so I’ve been making the rounds checking out a few of my spots from seasons past, as well as prospecting for some new ground. There’s been a number of birds showing up in a new spot this year so I’ve been trying to figure out their travel patterns as we lead up to the opener. I’ve watched two good toms do their best to run the show and rule the ladies. The flock basically consists of two toms, half a dozen jakes, and a pile of hens. As I cruised down the road to check up on some other birds, I caught a strutter on a ranch road tending the ladies. As I got my binocs up, I saw one of the hens squat on the side of the road to be bred by the gobbler.

I made a mad scramble to get my cameras out and up for the shot. The tom strutted up behind her, stepped up on her, and worked her over for the next five minutes. I thought he was gonna kill her! After he stepped off her, she flailed back to her feet and scooted away. Just moments after the first hen left, another hen came into the road and marched up to the tom for her turn. It was quite a show!

Switchin’ Gears

Monday, March 26th, 2012

The coyotes proved to be a little quicker and slicker than we were this past weekend, so we quickly switched gears and took the frustration out on the local gophers. Nothing seems to offer the fun of live-target practice like shooting gophers with a bow. It was the first bloodshed on gophers for me so far this Spring. It was a tag-team approach with me and Branden VanDyken swappin’ camera for bows as we took turns pounding on the gophers. Rookie bowhunter, Jesse Fulcher, even got to slay his first bow kill this weekend as he dropped the string on an over-confident gopher standing its ground.
It was a great time and just enough action to throw me into gopher mode as we wait on Spring turkey season to open.

Coyote Camp

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

With enough cabin fever to kill a man…it’s time to hit the road in search of coyotes, fox, or whatever else gets in the way. We’re doing our men’s Coyote Camp this weekend with our Outdoorsmen Church in Montana.

It should be a good time! Check back here for the updates.

Up Close With Brunton

Monday, March 19th, 2012

I recently had the opportunity to hang out with the good folks at Brunton Outdoor Group in Riverton, WY. Following a seminar I did in Douglas, WY, I made the drive over to the Brunton headquarters for an up-close look at this exciting company and the people that drive it. I met with Brunton President and CEO, John Smithbaker, and marketing guru, Dani Schafer for a tour of the top-notch facility that Brunton calls home. The Brunton company is rich in history with products being produced long before God put most of us on this earth. But even today, in 2012, Brunton continues to build on an incredible product line including world class binoculars, spotting scopes, portable power packs, transits, headlamps, camping gear, and much more.

Our Inside Look at Brunton Web Show is coming soon, so be sure to check back to catch it.

Turkey Scouting

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

With turkey season just a month away, I began looking and listening for birds yesterday. I found a few birds down the road from one of the spots I hunt yesterday afternoon. I went back in this morning and found that same group, and another bunch of birds up on the place I killed my MT tom last year. When I slipped in for a closer look, I discovered a bunch of jakes. They gobbled at about everything in the woods that squeeked or peeped. It was really good to hear the first gobbles of Spring! After snappin’ a couple shots of the jake party I went back down the road and found the big tom with all his hens. He was showing out bigtime as he followed the crowd of hens around.

It was good to see the birds right back where they need to be for the opener of Spring turkey season. I’ll keep an eye on these birds in the weeks ahead to know exactly the patterns for fly-down and the best place to pop up the Double Bull. We’ll also be checking out a few potential new spots for this season in the days ahead. Check back here often for all the updates.

Calf Fry Tonight

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

I’ve had the opportunity to speak and do seminars at some pretty unique venues over the years, but tonight’s event may top them all. I’m in Cherokee, OK for the Men & Boys Calf Fry going on at the Alfalfa County Fairgrounds tonight at 6:30pm. If you’re unfamiliar with calf fries, maybe the term “mountain oysters” would help. Yep! The main course tonight is deep-fried “you know whats.” The event will feature live music by The RuffCutts, and tons of food and prizes. Come see us!

Survey On Lighted Nocks

Sunday, March 11th, 2012

I got the following email from Mike Slinkard of Winner’s Choice. It’s a good opportunity to let your voice be heard and possibly open the door to lighted nocks in Orgegon…which could lead to other states following the lead. Check it out…

Hi All,

This is a very important issue to respond to if you would like to see lighted nocks legalized in Oregon. Currently lighted nocks are not legal to use here in Oregon but there are a lot of hunters that want this changed. It only takes about a minute to complete the survey and I think it will certainly help to get this silly changed here in Oregon.  FYI- What we are looking for is a simple rule change that allows lighted arrow nocks. it will not change anything else just nocks.

Even those of you who are not from Oregon please vote. That way if you ever come bowhunting here maybe we can have this rule changed for you.  PLEASE VOTE YES HERE AND PASS THIS ON TO ANY ONE YOU KNOW WITH LIKE VIEWS.

Thanks very much for all of your support over the years, and I hope you will be able to help us on this as well.
