Reality Check on Treestand Safety

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

The late season seems to be the time many treestand hunters slack off on doing the things that ensure their safety….such as wearing a treestand safety harness.

Let the video below be a reminder of the reality of what can so easily happen to any of us.
For the sake of your family and friends…never climb that tree without your treestand safety harness.

Rutty Bucks

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Rutty bucks have been gettin’ the shaft in recent days as Thanksgiving week once again proves to be the week to find big bucks anywhere and everywhere. Team member Chris Blaskowski shot a beautiful Montana river-bottom buck as it cruised by his stand in search of does. Chris hadn’t been in the stand five minutes when he heard the sound of the Can call coming from his wife’s (K-Mac’s) stand some 80 yards away. The buck paid no attention to K-Mac’s calls and stayed on a mission that led him right past Chris’ stand. Chris grunted to stop the buck as it stepped into the open. A second later the arrow was on its way. Chris has had one heck of a year in 2011 with his Mathews bow. He’s taken a pile of animals this year across Montana, as welll as South Africa.

Watch for Chris’ deer hunt coming soon to RBTV.

Katy Lou’s Buck

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Our friend and Nashville musician, Katy Lou Clark, became an official bowhunter recently when she stuck her first critter with a bow. Katy killed a great Tennessee buck while hunting a small woodlot near her home outside of Nashville.

Here’s her story….

I’d been seeing this particular buck running with another buck for a few days, just back behind my house. We live in the middle of a pretty busy part of town, just off the main road on about twelve wooded acres. My brother just gave me a bow this year, and after a couple months of target practice, I was pretty excited to shoot something with it come archery season. I set up in our barn one morning and watched this buck hang around with another buck and doe for two hours before he finally came close enough for a decent shot. I shot him at 23 yards. After chasing his blood trail through the thickets, I was glad to get him in the freezer! I hear they don’t all come this easy, so I’m grateful for an amazing first bow hunt!

Congrats to Katy Lou on a great first bow kill!

First Bow Buck for Alex

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

As you’ll see, we’re spotlighting a few of our good friends that have recently taken their first ever bow kills this season. For some, it’s their first bow kill of any kind, while for others, it’s their first buck or bear with a bow. Such is the case with my little buddy, Alex Mays. Alex has become quite the killer in recent years. He and his brother, Derek, have attended my MT Youth Bowhunter Camp in recent years and we immediately hit it off as bowhunting blood brothers. These two guys are eat up with shooting stuff with their bow…and that’s why I enjoy hangin’ out with them so much. Alex embarked on a relentless pursuit to get his first buck with a bow this season and it finally came together.

Here’s Alex’s story…

I shot my first archery buck today! I am so excited!  It was amazing!  I have been hunting ALOT and it’s getting close to the end of season, so when this buck came out I took the opportunity! It is a 4×4 whitetail. I’ve been going out in my tree stand almost every morning and afternoon since early September. I’ve moved my stand a couple times, and the last time, I moved it to a great spot. In my new stand I pulled back on a 140-class 5×5 a week ago and I couldn’t get a good shot so I didn’t take it. He was chasing does and the only time I could get him to stop he turned towards me and wouldn’t give me a shot I was comfortable with taking. That was VERY hard to do! The next day another 4×4 came in and wouldn’t get close enough for a shot.
We got out of school for a snow day today and the second my Mom said there was no school I grabbed my bow and headed to my stand that a land owner let me put up and hunt on his property. It is also the same area I got my first bear with a bow on September 23rd of this year. The buck I shot today came in early this morning chasing does around in the fresh snow. It was snowing really hard this morning and he wouldn’t hold still for 5 seconds! The fourth time he came around my stand I pulled back before he came into view and luckily this time he came in broadside and he stopped because there was a smaller buck in front of him. Then I took the shot and the arrow went completely through him and stuck in the ground. Then he ran 30 yards and tipped over! It was the most exciting moment!  I waited for a few minutes and then called my Mom at work and told her the news. Then I climbed down, strapped my bow to my back with my harness system and drug my buck home. It wasn’t too bad dragging him in the snow the first 20 minutes, but then I got tired! I finally got home, took some pictures and then we drove him over to my Grandpa’s shop and I skinned him out and hung him up. I found out that I shot him through both lungs! I was proud of my shot! I’ve practiced alot and it paid off.  It was the best day ever!

Congrats to Alex for a great first buck and for sticking with it to get it done with a bow! Watch for more coming from Alex in the days ahead…including the story and photos from his black bear bowhunt.

Schnee’s Extreme

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Since posting the “Wadin’ for Whitetails” blog last week, where I shared my strategy for getting back in to hard to reach deer hideouts with the use of waders, I’ve had several inquiries about what boots I like for bitter-cold sits on the stand or in a ground blind. The bottom line is, when the weather turns nasty, as it is right now in Montana, I switch over from my un-insulated mountain boots, to a pac boot. I personally wear the Schnee’s Extreme pac boot. It’s a 13″ boot, so I can tip-toe around shallow bodies of water and muck. The thing that has impressed me the most on these boots is their comfort. As expected, they offer a ton of warmth. But the comfort also extends into the foot-bed. Pac boots can often be difficult, even painful, to walk in. These boots however, are very easy on the feet and extremely comfy should you decide to get down from your stand and do a little cruisin’ on your feet.

Here’s the low-down on the particular Schnee’s pac boots that I’ve used the last four years…

Schnee’s Extreme pac boot is unbeatable for snowy and extreme cold conditions. Schnee’s built 9mm of wool felt right into the midsole from heel to toe, with 600g of Thinsulate™ Ultra Insulation built into the bottom around your foot. Finally, the boot is made for use with the company’s removable 400g Thinsulate™ liner, for 1000g of warmth. The Advantage sole provides excellent traction over all terrain. Comfort Rating: -40°F Active, -20°F Inactive.

Erin’s First Bow Kill

Friday, November 18th, 2011

I want to say a big congrats to our friend, Erin Hill, on killing her first critter with a bow! Erin’s had a tough season with what seemed like a rollercoaster of encounters around her stand over the last few months. However, last night it all came together and she made her shot count on a western Montana whitetail.
Congrats Erin! Keep it up!

Jon Paul’s TN Buck

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Jon Paul Moody had a November hunt to remember the other morning when every buck in his neck of the woods seemed to be out cruisin’ through the timber. This tall-tined 8-pointer came by the stand lookin’ for love, but got the whisper of death instead from Jon’s Mathews Drenalin.
Congrats Jon Paul!

Snowin’ & Blowin’

Monday, November 14th, 2011

It was a brutal day on the mountain yesterday in search of elk…and wolves! It was a great reminder of why gettin’ it done in September is priceless. A stormfront was blowing in and the mix of snow and cloud cover kept visibility pretty slim. We covered lots of ground but never saw a critter. We’d hoped for a break in the weather to finally catch some elk slippin’ out from their beds, but it never happened.
Gonna hit a few new spots this week now that there’s some snow finally showing up on the mountains.
