Train to Hunt’s Perfect Bowhunting Practice

Friday, May 27th, 2011

If you haven’t already done so, take a minute to check out and subscribe to the new and exciting website, TraintoHunt.com. My wife made the comment the other day, “Wow! You’re really sticking with this Train To Hunt thing, huh?”  The reason is, it’s designed for hunters…by hunters.  And that works for me.  As hardcore bowhunters, Dan and Kenton know what we need to prepare us for the woods.  The training and exercises are specifically designed to make you hunt stronger and longer like nothing else.

Today is a “Rest Day” at TrainToHunt.com, but there is a video there to check out on Perfect Practice for bowhunting. It stresses the need for a realistic practice regimen….something we often fail to do.

Carnage

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

I recently had the opportunity to go on what ended up being one of my coolest hunts in a long time…and it was just for gophers!  My buddy Travis and I headed down to a ranch in southwest Montana that was in need of some help with removal of the excess gophers in their fields. And “excess gophers” is exactly what they had! Thousands of them!  A major problem for any farmer…but a bounty of shooting opportunity for any bowhunter.

Travis went sniper-style and picked off a countless number of gophers from his perch at the top of the hill. I picked off a quick pile of the little rodents with my .22 until I couldn’t stand it any longer…it was time to pull out my bow!

With a quiver full of judos I worked the field, slingin’ arrows at any and every gopher that poked it’s head out of the hole. Sure, I wasn’t as much help to the rancher as my buddy shootin’ lead, but I did manage to shoot some 60+ gophers before it was all over, including several 1-shaft doubles.  The photos here feature a few of the ones that didn’t make it back into the hole.

Dave’s Bear

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

On his first weekend in the stand, Big Dave scored on a nice chocolate bear in the backcountry of Idaho. A big monster black boar showed up on the trail camera around noon last week. It’s a bear that showed up a few times last season, and one that Dave was after. However, when the chocolate colored bear slipped into the site, Dave couldn’t resist. He made a great shot and the bear only went 80 yards.
Congrats Dave!

Watch for Dave’s self-filmed bear hunt coming soon to RBTV.

Bear Country Blunders

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

There’s a price to pay for being the first one into bear country after a long, snowy winter. With a ton of snow still on the ground in many of our favorite spots in Idaho’s bear country, choices had to be made. “You think we can blow through that snow?” was the question, just moments before we realized, we couldn’t make it through the snow. Thank God Big Dave brought a shovel along on this trip. We spent the next several hours diggin’ the truck out of the snow. It was just another day in paradise for a few bear hunters that may have been a bit too eager to open up a trail into bear camp.

Live Targets

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Avid archers and bowhunters love to practice their skill. Time spent on the range flingin’ arrows is a true passion for many of us. However, few things can take the place of developing the hunting and shooting skills like practice on live targets. Whether its gophers, rock chucks, tree squirrels, rabbits, or other small game, practice on such critters is priceless. Sure, they are just small game animals, and can’t hardly compare to a bugling bull elk. But just try and put a “stalk” on one of these little critters and see if it doesn’t get you jacked up with excitement and small-game fever.

I don’t know of a better way to stay sharp between my big game hunts than slinging arrows at live targets…and it’s a whole lot more fun than shooting dots on the range!

Gear for Gohers: Judo-tipped arrows, rangefinder, binoculars, and when you find a honey-hole…pop up the Double Bull blind and let ‘em rip!

Longbow Longbeard

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Chris Blaskowski stuck it out and made good on a late season Montana longbeard with his bow this past week. Chris is one of those guys that’ll do what it takes to get his bird. In recent weeks he’s hoofed it all over the mountainside in search of turkeys and even paddled down the river in his canoe to tap a limited access area…but the birds continued to play hardball. However, the chess match quickly came to an end when Chris found a lonely tom that did everything right and slipped within longbow range of Chris’ Double Bull blind. Chris made a great shot and his Montana turkey tag was finally punched!

Congrats Chris!

Another One Bites the Dust

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Another one bites the dust for team member, Jon Paul Moody.  When it’s good…it’s good!  And this big tom put on  quite a show as he made his approach to Jon Paul’s setup.  For some 15 minutes this bird strutted and gobbled just 30 yards from the ground blind.  When he wouldn’t commit and come any closer, Jon Paul gave him the shaft.

Congrats Jon Paul!

Watch for this hunt coming soon right here at RBTV.

Revenge for Andrews

Monday, May 9th, 2011

It’s been a tough turkey season for many hunters this spring, with the turkey populations seemingly down and scattered from recent years. With the birds in western MT playing hardball, Hunter “HuntDawg” Andrews and his dad, Calvin, and brother, Billy, headed to eastern Montana to get a little revenge on the turkeys before the 2011 spring season wrapped up. And that’s just what they got.

Turkeys were slain and tags were punched. By the end of their 3-day run, the guys had managed to fill their tags and bring a half-dozen of eastern Montana’s turkeys back west.
Congrats to you guys!
