The Tom After the Storm

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Just a day after tornados ripped through the south killing hundreds, team member, Jon Paul Moody, took advantage of a calm morning after the storm to kill a big Tennessee longbeard. Patterning this bird was the key to success.  The landowner kept Jon Paul posted on the daily routine of this bird over the last few weeks. When the time was right, Jon Paul went in for the kill. No decoys…just being in the place the gobbler was wanting to be…it paid off big. Watch for this hunt coming soon at RBTV.
Congrats Jon Paul!

As we climb in and out of the ground blind today, our thoughts and prayers are with the many families that are dealing with the devastation and loss of family members and friends in this powerful storm.

Train To Hunt

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

I met Dan Staton and Kenton Clairmont of TrainToHunt.com at the 2011 ATA show in Indy and was immediately impressed with their passion for fitness…and more specifically, how it applies to the hunter. Like most hunters, I fail to put in the time that is needed to stay fit for bowhunting in the backcountry. I often cringe at the thought of working out or going back to the gym. But when I think about the direct results fitness training can have on my bowhunting success…I am motivated.  When I think about the fact that bear season is here once again and I realize that 65-pound packs on my back will soon be the norm as I pack into the backcountry of Idaho, I am moved to make a change.  Some folks are motivated by the arrival of swimsuit season…I am motivated by the arrival of bear season, elk season, and any other season for critters I can chase with my bow.

Here’s a look at TrainToHunt.com in their own words…

Breakin’ In The Mathews

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

It’s been a tough turkey season for many bowhunters around the country.  From Florida to the northwest, many of our guys have reported less than ideal turkey activity in the places that have always produced.  So when the opportunities are coming up…be it a big bird or small…some of the guys are making up for lost time!

Zeke Pipher of Nebraska has been battling unseasonably cold conditions, snow, and poor turkey action when he’s hit the woods.  So when a couple super-jakes slipped in to his setup he couldn’t help but to break in his brand new Mathews eZ7 and put his first tag of the year on a bird.  Zeke is blessed with the opportunity to kill multiple birds in NE so be watching for more to come from him.

And this morning Mark Hasenyager broke in his new Mathews Z7 Xtreme as well. We had the Darkhorse groundblind set up in the middle of four gobblers when the party started up.  Two jakes pitched down out in front of the blind, about 50 yards. They came in and put on a show as they checked out the DSD dekes at 8 yards from the blind. Then the boss came in to check out what all the fuss was about. The big tom tried his best to run the jakes off but they couldn’t stay away.  Mark let it rip on the big tom but his shot fell a bit short.  The jakes hung around the dekes even after the longbeard took off.  It was more than Mark could handle!  It was time for redemption!  Mark’s second shot was money and his Montana turkey tag was punched!
Watch for this hunt coming soon at RBTV.

Kimberly Mac Strikes Again

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Due to their work schedules Chris and Kimberly Mac only get to hunt weekends and a few afternoons each week. But this husband/wife duo has learned to make good on their time in the woods.
On the second Saturday of the Montana season Kim shot one of the many gobblers that paraded past their Darkhorse ground blind. The bird went just 40 yards before taking a nap. The other toms pounced on Kim’s bird, but at a distance of 40 yards Chris opted to pass on the shot with the long/curve bow he won at the recent Montana Bowhunter’s Convention.

Watch for more from these guys and their video coming soon.

Turkeys Are Dying!

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Turkeys are dying in Montana and around the country this week! I had an awesome hunt this morning and killed a big tom just moments after he pitched down past my Double Bull blind.
It’s been a season of success already for the RBTV team with a number of birds being killed in the last few days. Zeke Pipher killed a NE bird last week, Kimberly Mac and Branden stuck birds on Saturday, Jon Paul killed a big TN tom yesterday, and I punched my MT tag this morning.

Photos and stories of these hunts coming soon.

VanDyken’s MT Turkey

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

Week one of the Montana turkey season is in the books. It’s been a tough first week, but turkeys are finally starting to get the shaft. Branden VanDyken scored this weekend on a bittersweet hunt.
Here’s his story…

“With a hard late winter in our hunting area, we were struggling to find birds in our normal spots. We were forced to find permission on some new spots, but birds were still in big groups and not responding to calls well.
After getting some early opportunities and failing on shot execution, we got permission on a great spot with good birds. Setting up near the roost in the morning got us a shot…with one of my buddies missing. We were moving to another spot when we saw some more birds. I hopped out and set up on the one bird, he had other plans and took off. Later, I called and got two gobbles down the hill from me. I barely got set up behind a big juniper when two birds appeared running to my calls at 15 yards. They skirted the junipers and walked into a shooting lane at 30 yards. I was already at full draw and the arrow was on its way. Bird down! Now I would like to say the hunt ended there. Not the case! A neighbor from the joining property decided he was going to yell at us for hunting. He put the hunt into a downer for a bit, but we were in the right, so we weren’t too worried. Our landowner said not to worry, and he even invited us back!”

BroadHead Protector

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

While on a recent turkey hunting trip I went through the usual rigors of trying to get all my bowhunting gear, clothes, and boots crammed into my SKB bow case.  I always seem to somehow pull it off…and I can even do it while staying under the airport weight restrictions!  But I always deal with the hassle of unscrewing broadheads, packaging them safely, or trying to pad them enough that they don’t cut a bowstring or any other vital gear.  However on this last trip I was reminded of a product that was sent to me a while back for review. It is the BroadHead Protector.  And at first glance I honestly thought that it would serve me no use.  However, I’ve found it to be the perfect solution to traveling with your broadhead tipped arrows.  No more removal of broadheads when traveling.  Just slap on the BroadHead Protector and throw ‘em in the bow case. It’s a simple product.  One that you dont think you’d use…that is, until you need to use it!

Here’s the low-down on the BroadHead Protector…

The new Fixed Blade BroadHead Protector comes in a package of 6, are easy to install and can be used while broadheads are installed on arrows. They protect bow-strings from nicks and cuts while transporting arrows in your bow-case. The protectors will not come off during transport The protector can also be used as a broadhead wrench to safely install, remove and store your broadheads while keeping them sharp and protecting them and all of your other archery equipment from damage while in your gear box.

Heath Scores with Longbow

Friday, April 15th, 2011

As if spot-n-stalk turkey hunting with a bow wasn’t tough enough…RBTV team member, Heath Helgert, added the use of a longbow to the mix to make for the ultimate challenge. And when he slid to within striking distance of a couple of birds on a recent hunt, he made good on his goal for the season.
Heath was shooting his Centaur longbow and the nasty 2″+ cutting TreeShark from Simmons Broadheads.

With his Montana turkey tag punched, Heath now gets to play cameraman for the rest of us!
Congrats to ya Heath!
