RBTV Welcomes Zeke Pipher

Monday, March 28th, 2011

I want to welcome our newest team member, Zeke Pipher to RealityBowhunting.com and RBTV.  I discovered Zeke’s work in Bowhunter Magazine several years ago and was immediately impressed with the message he had to share.

Zeke and I share a passion for bowhunting critters…and using that passion for impacting the lives of others.  He is a friend and true brother-by-another-mother.  I’m glad to be partnering with Zeke and excited about what he brings to the table for RealityBowhunting.com in the way of articles, HeartShot entries, blog content, photos, videos, gear reviews, and words of wisdom to make us better…both in the woods and in life.

Zeke and his beautiful family call Nebraska home.  It is there he annually takes his share of turkeys and big Nebraska bucks.

Here’s the skinny on Zeke…

Zeke’s a writer, pastor, husband, and father of three young children. Bowhunting for Zeke is a way to spend time with God, strengthen friendships, and provide meat for his family and for other families in need. Many of his articles celebrate how hunting can be a values-driven activity which is both fun and fulfilling.

Zeke is a freelance writer and photographer whose articles and photos have appeared in numerous publications, including Bowhunting World, Deer and Deer Hunting, Bowhunter, and Petersen’s Bowhunting magazines. He’s writing a book that is scheduled for publication with Howard Books in 2012.

Since he could walk, Zeke’s spent every possible minute outside. His passion for the outdoors led him to earn a degree in Biology from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1993. After college Zeke worked as a graduate assistant in the Forestry, Fisheries, and Wildlife Department at the University of Nebraska. His research enabled him to work closely with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Zeke serves as the lead pastor of Heartland Evangelical Free Church in Central City, Nebraska. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Talbot School of Theology and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. His sermons are broadcast on the radio each week throughout central Nebraska. He’s currently working on a book about a country pastor’s first year.

“There’s no sanctuary more breathtaking than the natural world,” Zeke says.

Join me in welcoming Zeke Pipher as part of the RBTV crew!  You can see a few of his photos in the RBTV Team Gallery.  And be sure to follow Zeke’s bowhunting adventures…”thru the season”… right here at RealityBowhunting.com.

TN Youth Turkey Hunt

Monday, March 28th, 2011

My family and I made the long drive from MT to TN to make a surprise visit for my little sister, Jessi, who’s battling cancer again, as well as the rest of my family. Along the way, I stopped off to video my buddy, Benji Bona, as he took his boys on Saturday morning’s TN Youth Turkey Hunt. At just 8 and 12 years of age, these boys have already killed a handful of turkeys. The weather conditions were lousy. Rain, wind, thunder, and lightning. But the boys still got the job done when two longbeards slipped in to check out the calls and decoys. On the count of three the boys shot and dumped two fine birds! It was classic!

Congrats to Benji on the fine job he’s doing raising two great young hunters!

Turkey Trials

Monday, March 21st, 2011

It’s been a tough week for Rick Brock in Florida trying to pull a do-it-yourself bowhunt for Osceola turkeys. Rick hasn’t had the luxury of hunting with a guide or outfitter for pre-scouted turkeys. He’s simply hunting small tracts of land that he’s obtained access to and rollin’ with what that land has to offer. Weather conditions and moment-of-truth malfunctions have cost him bigtime this week…but he continues to stick it out.
Here’s the latest…

3/19/11
“Fog has been thick as pea soup in the morning. I had turkeys gobbling all around me in the fog. At least four if not five. The one behind me kept getting closer. Finally I can just make him out in the fog. Got camera on him but can just barely make him out. I look back at the DSD and there’s a hen standing right next to her. I swing the camera and get footage of the hen as another comes by. I video them for a minute when a strutter comes in. I swing camera on him and watch him strut all the way to my decoy. I get my bow drawn just as he reaches the edge of the frame and miss his head by a half inch and take a off a few feathers. He gobbles at me and then the other bird shows up. They fight for a few seconds and run off….”

3/20/11
“Thick fog and turkeys gobbling all around. One sneekey tom came in very cautious but put on a great show. When he finally commited and came beak to beak with my DSD decoy he seemed to get nervous and started sauntering off. In a rush, I botched the shot and he left unharmed.”

Tough times in Florida turkey country for Rick! Check back here to see if he can pull it off at the buzzer and score on an Osceola longbeard with his bow.

Turkey Satisfaction

Praise God…it’s turkey time once again! And there’s nothing like a little springtime satisfaction!

Turkey Update from Rick in FL

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Rick Brock is in Florida trying to stick some hogs and a turkey with his bow. He’s in the blind this morning. Here’s a quick update from him…

“It has been non-stop running here in FL the past few days. Family obligations have kept me out of the woods. I did get to sit and watch the sunrise yesterday and listen to at least 5 different birds gobble for two hours. I am in the ground blind now waiting for the sun to rise. Just heard the first tweet tweet bird of the morning. Its foggy and around 50 degrees and the dew has everything dripping. Typical Florida weather for March. I can hear hogs coming now…”

11:00am – “Fog was thick this morning. A small group of hogs came thru right before camera light. Not one gobble. Saw a lone hen. Fog didn’t lift till almost 10″
