New From Trophy Taker

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Our friends at Trophy Taker have brought some innovative, and very practical, new products to the industry for 2011.
Their new HeartBreaker Pro sight allows bowhunters the opportunity to bring target archery precision to the hunting camp. Micro-drive vertical rail adjustments allow all shooters to maximize range adjustments. The sight effectively uses all available travel and provides a positive stop point for your closest yard setting. Other features include: micro-adjustable windage, simple 2nd and 3rd axis adjustments, multiple pin guard and pin configurations, and adapter kits to fit many of the most popular pin guards from other sight companies.

Trophy Taker’s new Tight Point Field Tips allow you to put an end to loose, loud, and lost tips once and for all! These slick little field tips feature an O-Ring design that creates a snug fit inside the insert. A snug fit means quieter field tips that won’t rattle loose. These tips easily install and remove by hand. The tips are available in 85, 100, and 125 grains, and diameters of 9/32″, 5/16″, and 17/64″.

Another practical new product for 2011 is Trophy Taker’s Right Angle Wrist Sling. It’s simple. An angled mounting bracket ensurres that the sling easily slips on and off the hand. Allen wrench adjustments positively locks sling length in while allowing easy adjustment for the perfect fit.

More ATA Gear Unleashed

The crew at AMS Bowfishing have made a good thing even better with upgrades on the features of their popular Retriever Pro bowfishing reel. New for 2011, the Retriver Pro now features the AMS Trigger Guard that ensures excess line will not catch on the trigger. The reel also features Hi Vis line for the ultimate in visibility. The company has also brought a bowfishing sight to their product line for 2011 with the addition of their Apex Fiber Optic Single Pin Sight.   http://amsbowfishing.com

I had the opportunity to spend some time with Bill Montgomery at his Quick Draw Bowfishing booth and was immediately impressed with the product he offers to help keep the bowfishing arrow in place and ready for the shot. The Quick Draw bowfishing arrow rest accommodates beginners or seasoned shooters. The rubber gate is designed to allow quick and easy arrow loading; capturing the arrow, making it ready for that simple or fast action shot without the worry of the arrow falling off.  http://quickdrawoutdoorgear.com

Block Targets takes a different approach for 2011 with their new Block Black target line. Like the other Block targets, the new Block Black will stop thousands of arrows, but its new high-contrast design is easy on the eye, and is particularly easier to see at long range. It features PolyFusuion design for even longer target life and easy arrow removal for more practice and less fatigue.  http://blocktarget.com

The GlenDel target line welcomes its newest member, the GlenDel Pre Rut Buck. The Pre Rut Buck is smaller than the Full Rut and just a little bigger than the original buck, making it the perfect backyard target. Standing 36” at the shoulders, the Pre Rut target simulates a 250 lb. whitetail buck.  http://glendel.com

There was also a lot of tools for the high tech hunter released at this year’s show.
Videoing your own hunt has become the rage in recent years and Rhino Outdoors makes the task as easy as anyone with their new LID-CAM. The LID-CAM mounts under the bill of your hat…so what you see is what you capture on camera. Unlike other camera devices, the LID-CAM features a lens with the ability to rotate left or right to get that down-the-arrow camera angle you’re looking for. The LID-CAM features High-Definition 720P Video, 8x digital zoom with 3 presets, USB port for video file transfer, and the ability to record high quality sound, with noise reduction.   http://rhinoutdoors.com

For hunters wanting to dive into the sport of filming their own hunts, the Adventure Series tree arm from The 3rd Arm is hard to beat when it comes to a rock-solid camera support at a price you can afford. The Adventure series is constructed of air craft grade aluminum and built to the same specifications as the companies Pro series model. The Adventure Series unit was designed to be more compact in size, perfect for self-videoing or videoing from a standing position. The Adventure comes standard with a professional grade tree base, 1” ratchet strap, curved swing arm, and is also equipped with a custom built tension plate, for a non-slip connection with the camera head. The Adventure Series weighs in at just 4.8 pounds, with a maximum camera weight of 7 pounds.   http://the3rdarm.com

Ducks With a Bow

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

What do you do to pass the time while waiting on bowhunts for spring turkey and black bear?  I think we found the answer!  Team member, Kevin Drewry, is the man when it comes to callin’ and killin’ ducks.  However, with a passion for bowhunting, his latest challenge finds him in pursuit of late-season ducks with a bow…a feat that can humble even the greatest of waterfowlers. Kevin is using standard field tips backed with an Adder point for adequate punch on ducks. For aerial shots with a longbow he’s using flu-flu arrows, and when slingin’ with his compound at ducks in the decoys, he’s using arrows set up with three 5″ feathers. On a recent hunt, Kevin and good friend, Brent Garrison, slung their share of aerial shots at greenheads in the flooded timber, and although they had a few close calls, the mallards proved victorious. Kevin switched over to his compound when he had the opportunity at some ducks on the water and he got to drop the string on a Gadwall, Shoveler…and then killed one lonely coot with his longbow. Follow Kevin’s attempts at waterfowl with a bow right here at RealityBowhunting.com. You can also check out Kevin’s exciting hunting opportunities for children and youth at http://mallardmanor.com.

S4Gear FreeStyle720 Ground Blind Chair

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Catching up with more products I discovered at the recent ATA show in Indianapolis…the FreeStyle720 Ground Blind Chair from S4Gear offers a very innovative option for ground blind hunters. Our Inside Look at ATA show will be up soon and include interviews with the crew at S4Gear, but here’s a quick look at this slick new chair.

Engineered to make hunters more successful in the field, the Freestyle720’s large footprint/tri-pod design with a cantilevered seat allows the hunter to rotate a full 360° but also traverse a full 360°. This feature enables the hunter the silent mobility to efficiently and effectively traverse from window to window and make their shot—with proper form—from any angle while remaining in a seated position.

The key to the silent rotation is the coaxial bearing system coupled with the cantilevered seat frame. The coaxial bearing distributes the cantilevered load between four lubricant infused polymeric bearings, allowing for smooth and silent rotation and translation for the life of the product.

Quick and silent leg extensions allow the seat to be leveled on most terrain. Oversized feet on the bottom of the tri-pod are designed for four-season versatility and stability on virtually any terrain. The automatic cam-over latches on the legs allow the hunter to deploy the system quietly and quickly—even in the dark.

The seat is constructed from closed cell molded foam with a nylon laminate for a silent and comfortable cushion that minimizes heat and sweat build up.

A collapsible chair back is also available for purchase. More information on the Freestyle720 can be found at http://s4gear.com

Horn Party 2011

Friday, January 21st, 2011

One state…One season…One awesome pile of bone! I attended an annual end-of-the season Horn Party recently in western Montana and what I saw was pretty impressive. Antelope, whiteys, muleys, elk, and various other critters killed along the way, made up one awesome single-season collection of bone.

Congrats to the guys who punched their tags this season…and blessings to ya on big bucks and bulls in 2011!

Encounters With a Moose

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Check out a quick flic from a couple of my hunts at the Watch Now page. Two hunts in two days…covered up with moose! I was in the Double Bull blind trying to kill a few whitey does, but there was nothing but moose hangin’ around my setup.

Seasons End

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

The final day of bow season for deer has finally arrived bringing an end to another chapter in our ‘thru the season’ approach to bowhunting. The final day is always a bittersweet time as I look back over a long and exciting season…but look ahead to what awaits next. Countless hours have been spent in the stand, ground blind, and hoofin’ it on foot in the backcountry. In many cases, the journey alone was the reward. In other times, bone was collected and precious meat shared. So as my treestands and ground blinds once again find their place in the garage, I thank God for the moments I’ve walked with Him in wild places, chasin’ the critters that make my heart race fast. And I look on to the months ahead…looking forward to the coyotes, black bear, turkey, and ground squirrels that will soon find their way in front of my sights.
Blessings to you in 2011!

Check Out ‘Huntin’ Is Good’

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

I had the opportunity to meet Sam Klement, president of Huntin’ Is Good, at last week’s ATA show in Indy. You may know Sam from the annual Country Goes Huntin’ events, or through his bow-whacked gobblers featured on Realtree’s spring turkey videos. But Sam’s latest endeavor is having what could be the greatest impact of his career. The information below is why Sam and the crew at H.I.G. started their effort to make a difference in the lives of many folks through outdoor adventure. Check these guys out at http://huntinisgood.com and be sure to support their efforts. Through their own work, as well as the many ministries and organizations they support, they will no doubt make a difference in the lives of many people.

Hunting Industry Under Attack
Tracking Down An Industry-Wide Problem. Across the United States, and for well over three decades, the population of hunters in our country has been on the decline. Since 1975 alone, the number of hunters in the field has been reduced by over one third.

Since the issue of attrition within the hunting community has only recently become a cause for serious concern, usable research is still limited. But just as writers, industry experts and retailers all speculate on the causes, we have developed our own list of suspects which have created a negative impact on the hunting culture.

Erosion Of The Family Unit. With divorce rates and single parent families on the rise, the number of Dads and Grandfathers in a position to mentor our youth, and pass on an appreciation for the hunting culture, are dwindling fast.

The Anti-Hunting Community. Highly organized, with seemingly unlimited budgets, their goal, simply put, is the elimination of the hunting industry.

The Lure Of Technology. These days, our children are “jacked-in” to video games, hunting only in Cyber Space. They’ve become masters of Wi-Fi and pixels, not the way of the woods.

Industry Fragmentation. We have evolved into a highly fragmented industry… bow hunters, turkey hunters, rifle hunters, safari hunters, duck hunters, muzzle-loaders, gator hunters, low-fence, no-fence, highfence… it’s all become a lot of nonsense!

One thing we can all agree on 100% is that:
Huntin’ Is Good®

The day is fast approaching when we all must decide a course of action, or face the reality that our industry, and the way of life it represents, may become extinct.

It’s time we draw the line! The Hunting Tradition, and its’ Way of Life, needs your help! Please wear your HIG gear soon and often. This will let other’s know, what you already know, Huntin’ Is Good!
