RMEF Lethal Shot App

January 4th, 2013

The continuing convergence of high tech gadgetry and old style hunting is now available for iPhone and iPad technology thanks to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, which just unveiled its new LETHAL SHOT hunting app.

“LETHAL SHOT is the most realistic interactive app on the market for elk hunters,” said Steve Decker, RMEF vice president of marketing. “It lets the user navigate 360 degrees around the elk and choose any angle to gauge a shot’s effectiveness.”

3-D images allow the hunter to see an elk’s body structure, both internally and externally. It’s all designed to improve a hunter’s ability to acquire proficiency on shot angles when making split second decisions in the field. In addition to preparing hunters for that once-in-a-lifetime shot, it also provides an effective post-shot analysis by simulating the trajectory and learning what vital organs the bullet or arrow possibly struck.

“This is a big technological advance for elk hunters,” added Decker. “LETHAL SHOT is yet another way to help further our mission to ensure the future of elk, other wildlife, their habitat and our hunting heritage.”

More than a year in the making, LETHAL SHOT is not a game. No other app or product on the market shows elk anatomy and shot angles with such accuracy. By taking a shot with the skin on, then peeling away layers, the hunter gains a clear understanding of the shot’s trajectory, which translates into better shots and higher success in the field.

While the LETHAL SHOT app is now available for the iPad and iPhone, an Android version is soon to follow. Download the app here:

Byers Buck 2

December 12th, 2012

Justin Byers put some miles on the road and hours in the stand to punch his second buck tag of the year in the riverbottoms of western Montana. Hunting public land for whitetail bucks is never an easy task, but Justin stuck it out and was rewarded with success.
Congrats Justin!

HSS Elite Vest

December 12th, 2012

Hunter Safety System has introduced the HSS-Elite Series vest, a newly engineered treestand safety harness that perfectly fuses the elements of form and function in a high-performance zippered vest. The Elite bucks the notion that, in order to save your life, safety vests have to be bulky, uncomfortable and seriously lacking in the fashion department. Weighing less than 3 lbs., the fully featured Elite is surely destined to become a favorite for all-season hunting.

Starting with the patented HSS system harness that eliminates dangling straps and weave-through buckles, the Hunters Safety System engineers gave the Elite a newly designed tether strap that is lighter yet provides more shock absorption than previous model tethers. Then, they wrapped the harness in a combination of high-performance smart fabrics that are durable and silent.

The Elite design provides an easy-out, two-way zipper that protects the waist buckle and eliminates the possibility of binoculars or other accessories knocking against it. Its lightweight, brushed micro-tricot shell is deadly quiet, weather resistant and provides just the right amount of warmth when the temperature drops. The stretchable material in the Right-Fit™ zone is designed to keep the Elite snug and smooth, no matter your size, and the shoulders feature a unique silicone print that keeps backpacks and slings from slipping while walking in the field. The Elite is lined with HSS’s own Comfort Cool fabric that wicks moisture when the heat is on.

The exclusive Six-Plus-Two™ pocket design features two large bellows pockets with magnetic closures, two divider pockets to keep gear separated and quiet, and two quick-access pockets provide instant access to items like cell phones or mouth calls. The unique “plus-two” zippered pockets in the upper portion of the vest house removable binocular/accessory straps, or they can serve as another set of easy-access security pockets.

Donning the Elite is incredibly easy. Simply put the Elite on as you would any other vest, connect the waist buckle, route the leg straps between the legs, connect the Power Lock buckles on the leg straps, and then zip it up. Attach the tether to the Prussic knot on a LifeLine, and you’re ready to climb.

Hunter Safety system is proud to offer the new HSS-Elite in Realtree Xtra, one of the most innovative patterns available today. The extremely comfortable and functional Elite will be available at most fine outdoor retailers with a suggested retail price of $159.99.

BVD Buck

December 7th, 2012

Branden VanDyken (BVD) recently took advantage of an opportunity to punch a bonus buck tag in Montana. Once again, he struck quick and got the job done in short order.

Here’s his story…

“After a day and a half of searching for a shooter buck, I finally located this decent 4×4 muley chasing a doe. I used the Blacktail Betty decoy to close the distance to 30 yards a couple of times but each time the willow trees or other deer kept me from a clear shot. I dogged him and his does for over a mile and it finally paid off. They never spooked. They would look at me and just go back to doing their thing. Finally, the doe walked him through a lane at 55 yards and I made the shot. It was a really fun hunt!”

Congrats Branden! Great buck!

Cat Season is Here!

December 3rd, 2012

The season for cats (cougar/mountain lion) is officially open in Montana! But, with lots of rain and temps hangin’ out around 45-50 degrees this past weekend, the opener was a wash for a lot of guys. I’ve got a tag in my wallet and hope to kill my first cat this year, as well as tag along to film several others that have drawn special tags. Should be a fun year…when we finally get some snow!

Be sure to check out our friends at Painted Rock Outfitters for some really big cats from the seasons past. www.PaintedRockOutfitters.com

Big Nebraska 4×4!

November 30th, 2012

My good friend and bowhunting brother, Zeke Pipher, recently killed a big cornhusker buck that was hangin’ out a little too close to Zeke’s stomping grounds.
Zeke shares his story…

The rut was just kicking into gear here in the Cornhusker state. I sat in a cedar tree along a well-used travel corridor. I’d seen quite a few does in this area of the property, so I knew that the bucks would show up as soon as the “party” began.

It was 9:30 in the morning, and it’d been slow for the past hour. I looked away from the main trail, and then back, and there he was. He slipped through a clearing between two cedars and walked straight toward my stand. He caught my movement as I drew back but didn’t spook. When he turned broadside, I released my arrow and he ran about seventy-five yards.
I located the buck, and then ran home to get my kids. They helped me field dress him and drag him to the Ranger. We made venison risotto that very night out of the tender loin. I love this sport!

Gear used: Mathews HeliM, Gold Tip Pro Hunter 5575 arrow, Rage 100-gr. broadhead, TightSpot quiver, Vapor Trail Limb Driver rest, and Black Gold sight.

Bro’s Longbow Buck

November 27th, 2012

My goals for this bow season were to kill a deer with each one of my kids in the blind with me…and to shoot a deer with my longbow. It’s been a few years since I’ve killed anything with a traditional bow and I’ve been itchin’ to get back in the groove. Jimmy Neaves of Centaur Archery made me a longbow back in the spring. I’ve had a few of his bows, but this one is no doubt my favorite. It’s black…and I named it “Sin.” Like the Bible says, “The wages of sin is death.” And that has been my desire for this bow named Sin….death in the woods!
Yesterday morning I had the opportunity to put this bow to work. It was 9:00am when I heard a deer headed in my direction to my left. I looked up to see a buck at 30 yards, walking straight at me. I scrambled to grab my bow and to get the video camera rolling. When the buck popped out into the open I realized it was no doubt a longbow-shooter. With the deer at just 8 yards, I simply pointed the camera in the direction of the deer and prepared for the shot. When the buck paused I drew and released.
At first I thought my shot was too high. But as I considered the angle, I thought maybe I’d be okay. I was shooting the Simmons Treeshark, made by my buddy, Dave Oligee. It’s a monster broadhead with a 2″+ cutting diameter. I prayed that the head did its job of destruction. When I saw a massive bloodtrail almost immediatley from the shot scene, my optimism went through the roof. After following an easy bloodtrail, I found my buck just 100 yards from my stand. Needless to say, I was stoked! With a grin from ear to ear I had to call my wife and tell her of my success! I began to text my buddies to share in the excitement. Then I just sat there and soaked it in. There’s something pure and simple about hunting with a longbow. It was a refreshing moment kneeling beside that buck with my longbow in hand. It was one of my proudest moments in the woods as a bowhunter. I couldn’t help but give thanks to God and give Him all the glory for that special morning in His creation.
